for the Turkish Terrorists...and who it is allegedly admitted that he had been running weapons and confirmed to the Greeks that the British Intelligence Service had been directing and arming the terrorists. “Teleftea Ora” went on to say that Marley was a member of the British Intelligence service under the command of Major Macey.

Another Greek publication “Makhi” in its issue dated 5th June 1964, carried a story which claimed that “....British Helicopters with International Force markings (UN?) transported Turkish terrorists - they carry out flights between Turkish villages in Paphos District. British Officers also carried. Indignation among the Greeks in the aforesaid area. Major Macey's role” and went on to say that ”one of the helicopters carried the notorious British Major Macey, whose dark and infernal role in the Turkish Cypriot Terrorist Movement has been considerable” and claimed that as the flights were not connected with the task of the UN ...........”it is clear beyond a shadow of doubt that supplies and other assistance for the rebels are being carried by helicopter.....and used for spying.”

One of Major Macey's assignments was to discover what had happened to 32 Turkish hostages taken in Famagusta by Greek militia on May 11th. 1964. The story goes that he informed the Cypriot Turks that he was driving to the so called Cyprus 'pan-handle' to follow up information he had received . Osman Orek, the Defence Minister warned him to be careful, saying “the Greeks are watching you. I’d advise you not to go near that area at the moment.” Apparently Macey laughed, producing a battered photograph which showed him being carried shoulder high by villagers and soldiers in Greece saying, “this is my passport, this was taken when I won my medals. No Greek Cypriot who sees this will harm me.”

To which Orek is reported to have said “You have yet to be educated about these people,” pointing out that Greek Cypriots and mainland Greeks were not the same.

The warning was ignored and on June 7th. Major Macey left the Turkish village of Galatia in the pan-handle and headed back to Nicosia, his investigations apparently completed.
